3. Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point
Military history is very important and connects to our study of humanities because it is a part of our history that should never be forgotten. Many artist and writers have done some amazing work telling the stories of the many brave men and women who have fought for our freedom. California has a long military history that is important for us to remember.
Contains the following "analytical elements":
Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures) does the creator use? Be specific in your description. If you chose a place, be specific in your description of what you see or hear. Talk to your reader as though they cannot see the item but somehow must draw a painting of what you see or hear. 1 point
I chose The California State Military Museum located in the Sacramento Historical Park. It is just couple of blocks from the state capital. The museum opened in 1991, by then Governor Pete Wilson. This museum holds 30,000 military artifacts. One important aspect to this museum is the wall of honors for those who have given their life to the war on terrorism. This wall will contain in chronological order the names, ranks, and age of those who died so that we may live. Some of these 30,000 artifacts come from the California Mexican war, Civil war, WWI, WW2, and the Koran war. These artifacts range from the guns, swords, cannons, uniforms, flags, and letters.
Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point
My choice is about honor, duty and the pursuit for freedom in a world that tends to forget these concepts. An example of duty would be the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. More than 4,000 troops help the struggling people of San Francisco. This was a time when countless number of people had no clothes, shelter, and food. The military help the firefighters put out fires, and helped the police protect building from loitering.
During the 1992 riots in Los Angeles, more than 10,000 troops from the California National Guard, 2,000 component soldiers, and 1,500 Marines help with these riots. The LA riots were the most destructive civil disturbance in the United States history. These brave man and women helped the police officer contain the riots that caused 54 deaths and 800 million in property damage.
c. Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point
I thought it would be an interesting museum to read and learn about. I feel that my choice is an important so that people can have a better understanding and respect toward the military. Often people forget that these brave men and women are just doing what they are told to do. In the face of danger and death, they walk brave and stand up for those who cannot. All the while not being paid nearly enough for the sacrifices that they make for our freedom.
Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. Example: I learned that John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was based on his personal experience working with farm workers. I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point
I learned that the Museum houses more than 30,000 artifacts. I would like to know how many more artifacts are floating around in California.
5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? Link that persons blog to this entry (eg cut paste that blog entry here) . .5 point
I read Nicolette blog and the one thing I experienced was which was similar was when she described Yosemite as “appreciating nature’s unique ability to create perfection.” Often nature is overlook by the busy city people. This quote defines Yosemite for all that it is. Nature is beautiful and should be preserved not cut down. This is related to the historical context of this country because many people come to visit California for this national park.
